about

"The lyrical idea for this song was Christa's. She sent me a great deal of notes and chunks of lyrics that dealt with mistletoe from the perspective of the ancient Nordic and Druidic cultures as well as some links to articles she had reading on the traditions of mistletoe. The first verse deals primarily with the Nordic myth of Baldur, the light god who was slain when the trickster Loki convinced Baldur's blind brother Hod to throw a dart of mistletoe at him. The second verse describes a sacred Druid ceremony for the harvesting of mistletoe. The last verse is, of course, about the more modern tradition. Although I was well versed in the myth of Baldur I was not aware of the Druids reverence for the plant. Nor did I know that after the kiss under the mistletoe the male is supposed to pluck one of the berries. Once all the berries are plucked, no more kisses. It was fun collaborating lyrically on this song, and even more fun doing the research that went into it."

lyrics

As I stare in reverence of the tallest oak
Mother Darkness, in this night watch over me
As we wait for the world to emerge from your cloak
my white candle burns for thee
We wait for the sun again to pierce the night
Sit at your window and weave my destiny
I gaze upon the mistletoe and await the light
Sit on your throne and weave our destiny
My son's light snuffed, taken from Asgard
cut down by a brother who could not see
For a promise never made we traveled so far
and my sight forth and back did no good for me
A plant so young, a dart not innocent
in the the hands of a trickster leading a fool
to bring about a winter full of discontent
Mock my tears with white pearls beautiful and cruel

Pluck a berry
Steal a kiss
but when the berries are gone
kissing privilages end
Mistletoe
Mysterious
Hearts will be broken and
hearts will mend
Pretty poison
Killing cure
do you try now to atone
for what you have done
Sickles of gold
Kisses sweet and pure
Such reverence is yours
in the absence of the sun

We gather now below the tallest oak
and bring forth white bulls with virgin horns
With gold sickles and the whitest cloak
priests harvest gods plants while the world is reborn
We feast and drink in merriment
as is Druid custom and Celtic way
for such great gifts our gods have sent
a ray of hope on the year’s darkest day

That's all in the past, and this is now
Two lovers engaged in the sweetest dance
and they come to a stop below a mysterious bough
No time for ancient ways they're here for romance
No berry gets plucked even after they kiss
and swirl away, dancing by candlelight
Such a strange legacy has led us to this
the blooming of love and romance on a winter's night
